Richard Wiseman, writer and host of the In59Seconds series on YouTube, has a new project called Night School, which focuses on the science of sleep. As the website says, ” It’s time to reclaim the night, and to wake up to the power of sleep and dreaming.”
With that in mind, I encourage you to take the sleep test in the video above to determine how well you’re sleeping. Wiseman says at the end of the video there are some top tips for a better night’s sleep. Those are included below.
10 Tips for Improved Sleeping by Richard Wiseman
- Listen to relaxing music.
- Avoid using computers or smartphones two hours before you go to sleep.
- Make a list of all the things you have to do the next day so that you can go to bed without thinking about them.
- Make your brain tired by thinking of an animal for each letter of the alphabet.
- Move your bed far away from the door, but facing it.
- Eat a banana, because the carbohydrates in it will help your body relax.
- Reverse psychology—trying to stay awake will make you more tired.
- Wear a pair of warm socks to bed.
- Avoid drinking alcohol before going to bed.
- If you are unable to go to sleep after 20 minutes in bed, get up and do a non-simulating activity for a few minutes.
