Yesterday, I was given an inside look at AT&T Stadium’s event operations during the Monday night football game. Paul Turner, CFE, CSSP, director of event operations and security, invited IAVM staff and guests to the stadium for a “secret shop” activity in which we were given access to various levels of the stadium for observation and evaluation. Not only was this my first time attending a game at AT&T Stadium, but it was my first NFL game experience.
The atmosphere was full of energy from the moment the doors opened. But with a high volume of fans, security incidents are inevitable. This is where Paul comes in. His job does not start and end with the running of the play clock, however. He takes to the event command post five or more hours before game time, ensuring that the fans’ safety begins with the traffic approaching the stadium and ends with them safely exiting the lots no more than two hours after an event.
At the start of the second quarter, we were invited up to the command post to witness the facility and event operations team in action. The level of composure and effective communication displayed within the post was extraordinary. With a final attendance count over 87,000 fans, the importance of cohesion among event staff is really put into perspective.
Overall, the event made for an extremely positive visit to AT&T stadium. Through this experience, I have found a new respect for those that work to guarantee venue safety. Thank you, Paul, for giving us this amazing opportunity.
